CAMBRIDGE V. iPUTARURU. In a keen and exciting game the Cambridge representatives defeated Putaruru on Saturday' by 8 points to 3. Putaruru played with a rearranged team. On the run of play It looked like Putaruru being successful. Cambridge, however, played much better in the last 15 minutes, the forwards doing some splendid work, and were responsible for the last minute score. Dunstan played a fine game behind the Pularuru pack, and was well worthy his place. Patterson (Putaruru) was In fine form. He was always dangerous, especially in th e > lrs t spell, but lie unfortunately starved his wings. Stephenson, at full-back, gave a splendid exhibition, some of his saves being brilliant. Otway, Gordon and Wilnoski were the pick ol a great forward pack. Hamilton, full-back for Cambridge, played a splendid game, and did not miss many. The back division did not get much to do. The Ave-elghths, Burne and Holmes, were very sound Chubb, Tamati, Morse and Shaw were outstanding among the forwards, al of whom worked hard and well.

MATAIWATA V. MORRINSVILLE.

A WIN FOR THE LATTER

The Finlay Cup fixture between Matamata and MorrlnsvlUe was P ayed at Matamata under perfect conditions before a large attendance or spec tators. Carroll (Matamata did Wood lev and KeighUey (Morrinsville) were injured, hut replacements «ert allowed. The visitors owe Iheit win b Y 3 to nil to the superiority ot the forwards hooking and in the loose Egan kicked off for Matamata and too hard kicking made lledley force right away. Too hard kicking by the home backs caused two more forces. Moirinsvilie worked back to halfwayKeighUey lod a Morrinsville rush to the, twenty-five. I- Himan came to Matamata’s rescue on two oocasions in good style. B. Inman kicked right downfleld. Carroll following up fast collared Hedley In possession. The two Wilsons combined well ana only good tackling held them up. W. Cameron had a shot from a P eiaalt? from halfway, but the ball fell short, and plav came back to halfway. Carlson burst through from a rush to feed Story, but Collett knocked on with only the fullback In front. W. Cameron led a return rush, but Matamata came back again. Morrinsville gained ground and all the inside backs handled to gain no ground when Wilson vllle) threw Campbell over the sideline. The visiting hacks had another attempt on the other side, with a similar result and then W. 'Cameron lined right In the corner. From the ensuing llneout Matamata forced. I. Inman saved the home team twice In quick succession, Matamata forced twice and the visitors wcic having the better of it. Matamata forwards rushed play down to the -twenty-five, hut a return Morrinsville rush was countered by Carlson, Carroll and Fausett, the latter going right through for Harnett to pull him down from behind. Woodley had a pot which just fell under as halftime went, with no score.

Morrinsville went right down to the home line from the kick-off. The visitors continued on the offensive and W. Cameron had a pot right in front and missed. Matamata forced and the home forwards worked out, but a great rush by the Morrinsville backs sent Anderson over. He lost the ball, but Harnett fell on it. Welch missed a difficult kick. Morrinsville 3 Matamata 0

W. Cameron kicked through for Anderson to run across Held and K. Campbell just missed scoring. Carlson was conspicuous for good work in the forwards, but -Colin Cameron led a return rush to Matamata’s quarters. Hedley took a high hall and weak tackling let him right up, hut a force relieved. Leeson headed a forward rush to the line, and Fallon hanging on Morrinsville were awarded a free, but W. Cameron’s kick went outside. WAIPA BEATS TAUPIRI. At Taupiri on Saturday Waipa beat Taupiri by 21 to 6. For Waipa tries were scored by Lash (2), B. Quin, Martin, Elliott. Three tries were converted by Pollard. For Taupiri the scorers were Peckham and Miller. Mr Murray was referee. Comments on the Game. Notwithstanding the mud, which was particularly bad on one side of the field, it was a fine game to watch. There was not a great deal of tight play. The ball moved rapidly up and down field either with fine dribbling rushes or short snappy passing. . It is difficult to single out any outstanding players amongst the winners. They all played well and combined well. Lash showed up with two fine runs when lie scored, and is a hard man to stop. A. .lackson v al half did nice work and fed Ills backs well. Waipa owed their success to Ihe fine ieain work of the inside hacks and splendid dribbling of their forwards. Pollard al full back had lots to do and did it vtfell. Taupiri were unfortunate in not having the services of Whorsky and Souter (the two hookers) and Barclay, D. Smith, Wilcox and Abraham, all on the sick list.

The Taupiri lof wards more thin held their own and every man played up to his top form. The weakness was in the backs, who showed little combination. Individually they were bright in spots, but were too often caught out of position and collared m possession. Penny at half and Gill - Jng at lull-hack did fine work and .Miller at centre was outstanding 'with his long line kicks. Amongst the forwards Bishop, White, Henderson and Mulligan were prominent at times, and they all worked well. They more than held their own, especially In the second half.
