MORE RIFE THAN EVER. HOW TO STOP IT. TERMS OP IMPRISONMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The Chief Justice, addressing the Grand Jury regarding an alleged conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, said it was disturbing to find that though the act was passed eleven years ago making bookmaking a crime, it seemed more rife than ever. It was not correct to say that bookmaking cannot be stopped, but it could not be done by imposing lines upon their agents. The only way was for the Magistrates to impose terms of imprisonment without the option of lines.
