THE AUCKLAND CLUB. WINTER MEETING AT ELLERSLIE. SECOND DAY’S RESULTS. CRISTOBEL’S PANMURE HURDLES. DEAD HEAT IN FITZROY. The Auckland Racing Club's Winter meeting was continued at Ellerslie on Saturday in ideal weather before a good attendance. The track was holding. The opening event on the card, the Hunt Club Cup, was to the credit of Billy Boy, with Town Beauty and Senora the next to finish. King Ford, the Hamilton owned and Te Rapa trained candidate, returned over double figures by his victory over Full Measure and Gay Lap, who finished next in that order. ;.o the Ranfurly Handicap. High Pitch bad the measure of Plaice Up in the Remuera Hurdles, Nucleus filling third berth. A field of fourteen contested the Great Northern Steeplechase, Master Lu showing the way past the judge at the end of the three and three-quarter mile journey to Wako King and Lucess. The King George Handicap was won by Taneriri, with Inevitable and Refresher in the minor places. Christobel led Landmark and Nassock home in the Pannuire Hurdles, the last race on the programme, Fitzroy Handicap, resulting in a dead-heat between Pewa and Lord Val, with Catoma close up. Winner trained by N. J. Prenter, Paeroa. The Paeroa trained Cristobel was favourite with £1328 from Landmark (£1305), and Sir Russelll (£720). Sir Russell fell at the second fence and Desert Glow at the third. Cristobel was soon in charge showing the way through the straight to Marble -King, Landmark, Justify and Kairuri. Along the back Cristobel, Marble King, Landmark, and Kairuri were in thaL order, Justify and Patutahi having been pulled up. Cristobel won by two lengths from Landmark, who was ten lengths in front of Nassock. Kairuri was fourth, with Loving Cup and Marble King next. Time, 3min 21 2-3 sec. FITZROY HANDICAP. Little Doubt (£2047), Catoma (£1135), Grand Talk (£859) and Lord Val (£835), were supported in that order, Pewa being eighth fancy with £545. Lord Val had charge when they settled down from Pewa, Te Money, Good Idea, Little Doubt, Catoma and Valmarie. Half a mile from home Lord Val, Good Idea, Pewa, Te Money and Little Doubt were racing in that order. There was no change in the leading positions into the straiglyt, Lord Val and Pewa dead-heating, with Catoma a head away. Little Doubt was close up fourth and then came Grand Talk, Alloy, Wild Country,, Valmarie and Good Idea. Time, lmin 43 4-osec. Totalisator Returns.

The totalisator handled £48,902 10s, compared with £52,055 10s for the second day (Thursday) last season—a decrease of £3183. For the two days of the latest meeting the figures are £100,407 against £128,730 last season—a decrease of £28,263. HORSE DESTROYED. JOCKEY DISQUALIFIED. •DUNEDIN, Saturday. In the Steeplechase the rider of Tunamoe bad recourse to use his whip twice on Kapuna to keep him from crowding his mount outside the fence, and the outcome was that Kapuna gained a head verdict.® After ah inquiry, (he stewards decided to reverse the placings, and disqualified L. Hunt, rider of Kapuna, for six months. They also fined N. Trillo, Tunamoe’s pilot, £2 for the illegal use of Hie whip. INJURIES TO JOCKEY. DUNEDIN, Saturday. L. J. Ellis is out of action for the remainder of the season owing to a fracture of the thigh and severe head injuries, received as a result of Topere falling in the concluding event on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. It was considered at the time that the mishap was caused by a straying dog, which was m evidence on the course during the afternoon, but the inquiry salistled the stewards that although the dog was in the vicinity, it was not responsible for the fall, which was considered to be purely accidental. For theft from a dwelling, Harold James Bedford, 12 months’ imprisonment and again declared an habitual criminal; George Casscy, six months’ imprisonment; for perjury and forgery, George Leonard Taylor, six months' hard labour; for theft of trust funds on 57 counts, Harold John Moule Thompson and Samuel Robert Darlow, each five years’ reformative detention; for receiving stolen goods, Harold Victor Ruscoe, six months’ reformative detention.

GISBORNE SENTENCES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Saturday. In the Supreme Court to-day William Alexander Johnston for assaulting a small girl was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention, and live Maoris from Waipiro Bay on similar charges were sentenced lo reformative detention for various periods.
