70 UP ON FIRST INNINGS

NEW ZEALAND TOURISTS HOME TEAM ALL OUT FOR 305. VISITORS’ SECOND STRIKE OPENED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received June 5, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 4. Play in the New Zealand-Cambridge University match was resumed to-day. Cambridge, who had lost one wicket for eight, runs when stumps were drawn on Wednesday, resumod batting, and before the last wicket fell had scored 305 runs—7o behind the tourists’ total. Surfleet (who replaced Christopherson In the home team) contributed 86 and Kemp-Welch 61. Matheson took four of the Cambridge team’3 wickets for 76 runs.

New Zealand, when -stumps were drawn for the day, had scored 46, all the wickets being intact. For Cambridge Kemp-Welch and Surfleet added 126 for the seoond wicket. The former was run out shortly after lunch. Surfleet, who was making his first appearance for the University, was batting soundly and appeared well set for a century, when he was dismissed by a ball from Matheson which ju3t shifted the off-bail.

Matheson struck form with the ball and after the second century four wickets fell rapidly. Fabian then made a oalm stand -and greatly improved the Cambridge score. The wicket was a batsman’s paradise, hut the New Zealand bowlers kept a steady length. Matheson bowled accurately with considerable pace, and deserved better figures. New Zealand’s fielding was again below standard, several catches being dropped. Dempster and Mills batted brightly for 40 minutes before slumps were drawn. The following are the scores:— CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. First Innings. The tourists will to-morrow commence a three day match against Somerset. This County finished fourteenth in the championship last season. Of their first fourteen of twenty-eight engagements four were drawn and in the others they were beaten. However, they had a qulok change of fortune and thereafter suffered defeat on only one occasion. In partial explanation of their sorry start, Somerset had bad luck. Wellard, a promising fast medium met with a strain and had to stand down during the early part of the season. Luckes, the wicket-keeper, broke down in health and the County was without the services of G. F. Earle, their hard hitter, who was in New Zealand with the latest team. Nothing was seen of Macßryan, who some years ago occupied high rank among amateur batsmen, while M. D. Lyon and Considine again turned out on only a few occasions. ' The County’s most outstanding player is *,T. C. White. In 1928-29 White played in five Test matches against Australia, in Australia; he played in a test against Australia in England in 1921 and again represented England against Australia at Lord’s last season. On that occasion, when Australia compiled the phenomenal total of 729 for 6 wickets, he captured three wickets for 158 runs in 51 overs. In County cricket last season White, despite the fact that he was away a good deal, took over 100 wickets for the twelfth season in succession.

The 1927 New Zealand touring team won by 94 runs when they played this County. The scores were: Somerset 117 and 07, New Zealand 150 and 128. The Australian team last year secured a win by an innings' and 158 runs against Somerset. Scores: Somerset 121 and 81. Australia 300.
