THE EARTHQUAKE AREA.
REHABILITATION OF NAPIER. PREMIER REPLIES TO CRITICISM* (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Replying to criticism of the statement issued by the Hawke’s Bay Rehabilitation Committee, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, stated to-day that Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P., and Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., apparently came to the wijong conclusion that because the committee decided that its headquarters were to be in Wellington, it did not intend to hold sittings in the earthquake area. “By a full measure of co-operation with the local committees and with the assistance of district Government officers located throughout the area,” said Mr Forbes, “ a considerable part of the checking and verification of claims will be thus arranged, in 'order to make the maximum amount available for rehabilitation, rather th'ap use up funds by the way of avoidable committee costs.”
Mr Forbes said he was sure the committee would deal with the problem in a comprehensive manner, and would fully study the difficulties of the people concerned In the afflicted areas before making its recommendations.
He concluded by staling that the Government had every confidence in the committee, which had arranged to meet at Napier next Monday.
