ONEHUNGA v. WANDERERS. HOME TEAM VICTORIOUS. A MARGIN OF THREE GOALS. An early season test of mettle was given at Seddon Park yesterday afternoon, when the Onenunga senior team met the Hamilton Wanderers’ senior team in a friendly contest. It cannot be said that either team was in first class form, which is only natural so early in the season, but a good, swift and clever exposition of the soccer code was provided, especially by Wanderers, whose play was of a very high standard. Included In the Onehunga team was Zuill considered by many the best goalkeeper in Auckland and Woodhall the very versatile halfback. The majority of the home team are well known, but Cavaye and Cooper, two new forward men, made their first appearance with the Wanderers. The teams turned out as follows:

Onehunga (blue and gold) : J. Zuill, Lindsay, Alexander, R. Woodhall, Dick, Scandle, Marlow, F- Zuill, J. Woodhail, Griffiths and Moon. Wanderers: Elvey, Gardiner, Imrie, Smith, Mills, Bullock, Rogers, Cooper, Neale, Cavaye and Schonau. The ground was in good condition and the game was watched by a fair crowd. Wanderers won the toss and immediately became agressive. The visiting goaler was tested early and proved equal to his task. A pretty, bit of head play by Cavaye gave the ball to Schonau who shot but missed. From the goal kick Neale secured and cleverly eluding Alexander, scored with a low shot.

Wanderers 1 Onehunga 0 Play for the first quarter of an hour was in the visiting half, Wanderers having by far the best of the play. Onehunga then advanced, hut what seemed a very dangerous movement came to nought. Smith took the ball nicely on its return up field and passing to Rogers the latter centred to Neale who drove in a first timer, the ball striking the bar. A few seconds later Neale again severely tested the visiting goaler, placing a shot right at the foot of the upright. Wanderers were playing football of a very high standard and the season for them holds much promise. A misunderstanding between Alexander and Zuill let Cooper in and he netted from a few- feetWanderers 2 Onehunga 0

Neale came near scoring again a few minutes later from a centre from Schonau. lie slipped, however, and the hall went high. Mills, Gardiner and Imrie were dong excellent work and were always in the thick of it. A centre from Schonau gave Cooper a wonderful chance. He drove in a terrific shot, which, however, struck the bar and went over. From a clearance by Mills the ball travelled to the Wanderers’ left where Cavaye passed in to Neale. The latter bored his way through the defence and by a piece of brilliant play, registered a third for Wanderers.

Wanderers Onehunga

Prom the restart the ball travelled to the Onehunga left wing where Gardiner was out of position and Marlow ran in and drove in an unstoppable shot. Wanderers 3 Onehunga 1 Second Half. On the resumption the Blue and Golds pressed and for a time gave Wanderers something to think about. Bullock was doing trojan work and was ever on the ball. Marlow came near scoring after Elvey had once attempted to punch clear, but the Up shot passed outside the post. A corner followed for the Blue and Golds but nothing came of it. Wanderers now surged down and a centre from Schonau gave Cooper an open goal. He kicked wildly over the ball and the chance was lost. Onehunga then broke away on the right. Good com--1 binatlon by Moon and Quill ended in the latter centring. Marlow was left with no opposition but he shot wide. Wanderers now retaliated and Neale swung a pass to Schonau. This player sent inside to Cavaye who drove a high shot into 'the net leaving Quid helpless. Wanderers 4 Onehunga 1 Mill’s head seemed always in tae way and i't had as many contacts with the leather as most boots on the field. He played a strenuous game and his line play was always sure. Cooper gave great aid to the home halves and played a strenuous game in place. Dick, the Onehunga centre half stione for his side in opening up attacks, while Griffiths did a lot of hard work. A right forward move initiated through Gardner dallying his clearance gave Moon a chance which he accepted by running right into the goal and netting. Wanderers 4 Onehunga 2 The closing ten minutes of the game was marked by numerous minor casualties, play having to be suspended repeatedly to permit of recovery. The game had become very forceful and the visiting goal-keeper when out from his charge had a severe tussle to clear from two opponents. Schonau made a clear run along the left and placing neatly to Neale the latter tipped through adding number five for Wanderers shortly Del'ore (lie whistle blew. Wanderers 5 Onehunga 2
