TROTTING IN HAMILTON

THE WAIKATO CLUB.

WINTER SHOW MEETING. WET WEATHER ON SATURDAY. The Winter Show meeting- of the Waikato Trotting Cluh, a special permit for the latest season, was carried out at the Club’s headquarters at Claudelands on Saturday. It was unfortunate that wet weather was experienced. Under the circumstances the attendance was good, while the standard of the racing was high. The Canterbury owned St. George won the Cup, while Sir Voyage, who had an easy win in the main event for trotters, the Ruakura Handicap, also hails from the same district. The sprint honours in the Eureka Handicap went to the Auckland owned Hohoro, whose victory was of the surprise order.

In the Novice Handicap the nineteen acceptors kept their engagement. Bessie Parrish was £Bl better favoured than Tiwha, with the Win Huon —Colonel Thorpe bracket next in request. The verdict went to the fourth favourite, Zanzibar, who beat Bessie Parrish by a long neck, with Win Huon five lengths away. Colonel Thorpe was the next to finish, A Good Finish. Pegaway was the only one missing from the Newstead Handicap in which there were eighteen starters. Jackie Thorpe was £23 better fancied than Gleao, with Derby Vale third in demand. The favourite prevailed by a neck from Jersey Thorpe, who was a head in front of Great Fame, with Oliver Thorpe close up fourth. The defection of Brutus and Dealer left seven pacers to contest the two mile Winter Show Cup. The Tamahere trained First Flight was favourite with £1.40 more than the Canterbury owned St. iGeorge, while Peter Pirate was third choice. A good raoe saw St. George score convincingly by half a length from Peter Pirate, with First Flight and Impromptu in that order. Australian Trotters Appear. The Held for the trotters’ race, the Ruakura Handicap, was reduced to five by the scratching of. Wimmera King, Etta Cole, and Jock Bingen. Sir Voyage, from W. J. Tomkinson’s Christchurch stable was backed down to even money with £197 more than Valloden. This pair and Roi Grande were Australian bred geldings making their first appearance,in New Zealand. Sir Voyage led from end to end of the two miles to beat Valloden, by six lengths pulling up, with Gold Star ten lengths away and Roi Grande a similar distance off. The defection of St. George left nine to decide the sprint honours in the Eureka Handicap. Glenlake, a stablemate of the Cup winner, St. George, carried £342 more than Jock Bingen, with Master Huia next best supported. The eighth fancy Hohoro led throughout the mile to beat the Tamahere trained Little Guy by a length and give a double figure return, the best of the day. Dad’s Hope was a length and a half further back, with the back marker, Master Huia, the next to pass the judge.

To Kowhal to Carnui.

Thirteen appeared for the two mile Te Kowhai Handicap, Myrtlene, Chrystal, Kewpie's Triumph, Modern Light, Tiny Rose and Jackie Thorpe being the scratchings. Carnui was £lO6 better thought of than Glenlake, who had started in the preceding race, while Inverness was a-moderate third choice. Carnui finished well to score by a length from the eighth favourite, Andover, who was two lengths in front of Prince Pedro. Inverness was the next to finish. The withdrawal .of Hinton Bell, Myrtlene, Great Fame, Queen’s Bond, Carnui and Prince Pedro left fourteen in the concluding event, the mile and a 'quarter Kaipald Handicap. Clean, with £lls more than June Nordica, was a good first fancy, the Wkakahihi Hohoro bracket (the latter being rehandicapped from 36yds to 48yds for his earlier success) having the best call of the remainder. June Nordica, from the back mark of 48yds, scored comfortably by a length and a haM over Dad’s Hope, with Cleao and Kewpie’s Triumph in the following places.
