PLAY IN THE RAIN. OLD BOY‘3 LEAD KAIPAKI. *-) - * PIRATES ACCOUNT FOR HINEMOA. In drizzling rain the Waikato Hockey Association’s senior competition was carried to a further stage on Steele Park on Satunday afternoon. The ground was sodden, and the play wa9 not up to tho usual standard, although Pirates and Hlnomoa provided some spectacular incidents. In the first game Old Boys secured an easy win over Kaipakl by six goals to nil. Pirates were one up on Hlnemoa, With the score of five goals to four. . OLD BOYS EASY WIN. TOO STRONG FOR KAIPAKI. On No. 1 ground Old 'Boys met Kaipaki. The teams were as follows: A Old Boys.—M. West, D. Pountney, T. Ewan, C. Ross, Harefleld, Davies, Jane, Storry, Craig, Kelly, Haverbier. Kaipald.—Joil, O'Connor, J. Tarr, W. Tarr, G. Bones, Kivell, L. Turnwald, Goodwin, Gillett, Foster, F. Bones. Old Boys won the toss and played with the brisk breeze in their favour. Kaipaki had the best of the bully off, C> Bones taking the ball through to Old Boys’s twenty-live, but the defenders rallied, and the forwards forced the attackers back to their own goal line, Kelly just failing with a shot at goal. Storry, in the ensuing melee, in-passed to Davies, but the shot went astray, and a good opportunity was lost. Kivell temporarily eased the pressure in „the Kaipaki circle, but Old Boys were soon back again, and tight play around the goal followed. Ewan stopped an attempted breakaway, and sent the ball out to Storry, who centred, but it went over the back line. From a short corner Ewan gained possession and sent in a hard shot which grazed the post and went out. Play moved back to half-way, where from a throw-in Storry and Jane took the ball up the line to Kaipaki’s twenty-live, Old Boys were now pressing strongly, and it was only the sound goal keeping of Foster that kept the attackers from . scoring. Kaipaki at last broke away, but offside play lost most of the ground gained. Kivell and C. Bones ‘' were prominent ill - a good passing ihovement which carried play to Old Boys’ territory, the ball going out near the corner Hag. Joil held up an Old Boys’ counter attack at half-way, but - v Ewan came up fast and robbed him, passing to Haverbier, wlio, however, fumbled. J. Tarr opened a promising movement which reached half-way before it collapsed. Loose p|ay followed, Old Boys having the margin of attack. The Score Openod. Jane sent in a flier from near the edge of the circle, but the ball struck the cross-bar, and rebounded into piay. The second match on No. 1 ground was provided by Pirates, and lllnemoa. The teams were:— Pirates. —Darrall, Richards, Clark, Molloy, Vowless. Gurney. Price, Hunter, Powdrill. Allsop broke away, and led a forward rush into Pirates’ twenty-five, Andrews finishing off the movement with a good goal. Hinemoa 1 Pirates 0 Heartened by their success Hinemoa attacked strongly, and had Pirates defending strenuously in their circle. Vowless relieved with a long shot, but Hunt intercepted. Play was held up at this stage owing to an injury to Coombes, who was able to resume after receiving attention. Hunter dribbled the ball down the line tohhalf-war,y r , where he was held up, but the Pirates pack came up quickly, and a strong attack ■ was launched, Hunter having an unsuccessful shot at goal. . Seal took a free, and sent the ball to Coombes, who hit it to Clark, who carried it to halfway. Up and down play followed, neither side gaining much ground. From a throw-in in Pirates’ twentyfive Hunter and Powdrill placed the defenders in a good position. The ball went out to Price, who centred, but it rolled over the back line before Hunter could reach it. Allsop and Latta, who were playing brilliantly, combined in a passing movement which reached Pirates’ circle, Allsop’s shot going over the crossbar. The Tallies Equal. Pirates rallied, and a fast passing rush in which Gurney, Vowless, and Powdrill were prominent,, culminated in a successful shot at goal by Powdrill. f Pirates i Hinemoa 1 Allsop again got away, Gurney intercepting at Hinemoa’s twenty j flve. Vowless, Powdrill and Hunter did some useful work in the ensuing play. Munro gained much ground for Hinemoa with a good solo run, the ball going out near the corner flag. From the throw-in the ball went to Allsop, whose shot hit the goal post and rebounded. Latta, however, was handy, and netted the ball from an easy position. j Hinemoa H Pirates 1 Gurney gained possession, and sent on to Price, who centred to Hunter, who scored brilliantly, placing the tallies again equal. Pirates 2 Hinemoa ............ 2 Hunter and Powdrill brought the ball into Hinemoa’s circle, but Allsop relieved, hitting almost to half-way. Minnear, on the wing v centred, and Molioy, coming up fast, sent on to Powdrill, who mishit when Pirates were in a good position. Play remained centred In just outside Hinemoa’s circle, a free temporarily relieving. Pirates Ahead Again. Vowless gained possession, and sent in a good shot to Hunter, who went on to score an easy goal. Pirates ............ 3__ Hinemoa ............ 2 From a throw-in Latta took the ball into Pirates’ twenty-five, but lost possession, the bail going out at the corner flag. Half-time came with no further score. Tho Seoond Half. Pirates entered Hinemoa’s territory early In the second session, but Munro intercepted, and turned the tide of at j, taok. Minnear sent down a long shot to Hinemoa’s cirole, Kllham returning to half-way. A sharp exchange followed, Latta penetrating the Pirates’ defence to score easily. Immediately following the bully .off he notched another after evading several tacklers, making the scores—Hinemoa 4 Pirates 3 . Pirates rallied, but a free gained much ground for Hinemoa, and play became centred in Pirates’ twenty-five. The defenders at last broke away, Hunter running through the Hinemoa backs to equalise the scores— Pirates 4 Hinemoa ............ 4 Up and down play followed, until from a quarter way bully Powdrill gained possession and with Hunter in support carried the ball to the opposition circle, Hunter shooting to score. Pirates 5 Hinemoa ............ 4 As time grew short pjay became fast and furious, Hinemoa attacking strongly. Darrall saved well on several occasions, and play ended with no further score. Messrs G.
