N.Z. ASSOCIATION. THE VISITORS ENTERTAINED. At the conclusioh of the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association on Thursday evening a very enjoyable supper and smoke concert was tendered the visiting members by the local branch. Mr R. D. Duxfleld, president of the local branch, presided and extended a hearty welcome to those present. “Owing to the general financial depression I am agreeably surprised to see so many present,” added Mr Duxflelcl. -“Referring to the depression I think that as New Zealand is a young and prosperous country it will not be long before we will be back to normal times. Mr Duxfleld eulogised the capabilities of the new president before concluding his address. Mr R. Peach, proopsing the toast of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association," said that the Association was . formed lyears ago to prove that the Shorthorn'breed was equal, if not better, than any other breed. It Is now recognised that Shorthorn cattle are better suited for cross purposes than any other breed, he added. Many prizes had been won at A. and P. Shows by this breed of cattle. Standardised, Cheese. Mr >H. Bell proposed the toast of “The Wellington 'Branch." Mr G. N. Bell, replying, remarked that the Wellington branch was only small, hut now that the standardised cheese scheme had not gone ahead he was sure the breed would nourish m that district. (Applause). Mr H. Bond, Palmerston 'North, proposed the toast of the Canterbury Branch, ’ the president, Mr R. Peaoh, replying. Mr J. H. Mason, in proposing the toast of the ‘Hawke’s Bay Branch referred to the terrible set back and tremendous loss the branch received as a result of the dreadful earthquaxe disaster. The sympathy of all the members of the Association went out to those who lost so much at'that time The speaker referred to the loss the Association sustained when the Rev. Father Boyle was killed as the result of the earthquake. Father Boyle was a very enthusiastic breeder, added Mr Mason, and we shah miss Wall, in reply, said that though the disaster had set the branch back a lot, the people had the right spirit and were working enthusiastically together. Me predicted that it would not be long before the branch was back to normal. ■Mr E. Trimble proposed the toast "The Bay of Plenty Branch," Mr R. Law and Mr W. Martin responding. Mr A. Edmonds proposed the toast "The Franklin Branch," Messrs J. McGovern and W. Bennett replying. Mr M. Gheezi, Waiuku, proposed the toast of the Waikato Branch.
