THE BRITISH GAMES. NURMI’S ,UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT United Press (Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, May 25. Thirty thousand people witnessed the British Games at Stamford Bridge. R. Thomas gained the British record in the mile open off scratch in 4.13 2-5. The principal attraction was Nurmi’s attempt to beat Shrubb’s four-mile flat record of 19.23 2-5, in which he failed by fifteen seconds. Having hurt his foot when training he never looked likely to break the record. The race resulted: —J. Winfield (Derby), 240 yards, 1; G. Gretton (Woodford Green), 300 yards, 2; Nurmi, scr., 3. Won by thirty yards. Time, 19.19 1-5. The triangular international contest resulted: Achilles Club, 59i points; Deutscher Berliner Sports Club, 48J; Staid Francais, 46. Martin (Stade Franoais) won the .440 and 880 yards and Lord Burghley (Achilles) the 100 yards hurdles.
