RELIEVING DESTITUTION,

DELEGATION AT WELLINGTON* OBJECTIONS TO FOOD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. A deputation representing the Wellington Trades and Labour Council waited on the, Wellington Hospital Board 10-day and asked for the board’s co-operation in getting the Government to provide EUitable -shelter for destitute unemployed. It was stated that arrangements should also be made to supply food. Members of the deputation took exception to the arrangement under which men who were unemployed had to do thr.ee hours’ work for the City Council before they could obtain assistance. Mr F. Castle, chairman of the board, said the work offered by the City Council had been provided at the request of the hoard. It was not part . of the council’s ordinary work. Th</>sustenarice in return for three hours’ work amounted to 3s for single men and 5s for married men. The board was doing all it could, and the deputation’s proposals would he referred to a committee. Another deputation was appointed to place the views of the men before the Hospital Board. Mr Grayndler, one of the speakers, said he objected to unemployed men being paid at the rate of 3s a day. The standard wage of 14s should be paid. The men were supposed to start work that morning, but had refused to do so. Mr J. Sanford said he had received many complaints about the -quality of the food that the men were given at ■the free meals. Mr Lowe, of the social welfare organisation, said lie was surprised to hear that. He had asked the men what eating house they preferred, and they had asked to be sent to the one. that Mr Sanford was complaining about. The deputation was asked to tell the men to call, at the social welfare counter and present their tickets, when each case would be treated on merits.
