REGATTA AND CARNIVAL

THE HAMILTON FESTIVAL ANNIVERSARY DAY GATHERING. The Anniversary Day (January 29) regatta and grand aquatic carnival which will be held on the Waikato River .at Hamilton, is being looked forward to with very marked interest and, given fine weather, there should be good patronage from the public. The rowing events, which will form one of the features of the regatta, promise to draw very strong support from provincial clubs and keen finishes should be the order of the day. The Senior and Junior Fours will be two of the leading races among the ten set dowm for the occasion, while the Handicap Single Sculls is another contest in which the fortunes will be followed with absorbing interest. Eight Oar Challenge. A special feature of the programme will be the eight oar challenge forthe Somerville Shield in which the holders, Hamilton, will be opposed by a strong crew from the Tauranga Club. Canoe racing is also to figure largely on the list and there will be a dozen events under the auspices of the newly formed Hamilton Canoe Club. Yet another feature of the programme will be the life-saving and fescue work demonstrations by the St. John Ambulance which will be represented by Auckland City and provincial brigades. The Waikato Regimental and South Auckland Caledonian Pipe Bands will be in attendance to add to the pleasure of the occasion. Tiie executive, of which Mr K. Halliday, is hon.. secretary, has arrangements well advanced and it is hoped that their efforts will be crowned with deserved success.

THE MERCER PROGRAMME

TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 4 21. A PROMINENT PRIZE LIST. The Mercer regatta, to be held on Saturday, February 2i, contains a very prominent prize list of £l5O, and trophies for special events. There are seven rowing events, viz.: Maiden Fours (10.0 and under), Maiden Fours (open weights), Youths’ Fours (under 21 years), Junior Fours, Maiden Pair Oar, Junior Pair Oar; Handicap Single Sculls. In this division the talent should be prominent and the competition very keen. Four events for outboard motors are also featured, in which division the Drysdale Challenge Cup and the Chamberlain Gup arc offered as special awards. The novelty events are many, while piping and dancing is another department which will be of absorbing interest. The rowing entries will close on February 7 with Mr E. H. Buckler, hon. secretary, Auckland Rowing Association, box 29, Auckland. For all Maori events entry is free. Full particulars will be supplied by Mr A. J. Watts (hon. secretary), P.O. box 3, Mercer.
