ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA.
OSCAR GARDEN’S FLIGHT. A NOTEWORTHY. ACHIEVEMENT. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. PERTH; Nov. 4. Mr Oscar Garden, the young New Zealand airman who left England on October 17, has succeeded in flying to Australia in 19 days. He arrived at Bima yesterday afternoon and left today for Kupang, Timor Island. The airman reached Kupang at 10.30 a.m. and hopped off for Wyndham at 11.15 a.m., reaching his destination at 5 p.m. Mr Garden’s achievement is regarded as most noteworthy for, one with such a comparatively small knowledge of aviation and long-distance flying.
Mr Garden’s progress on his flight was as follows: — October 17 —Left - Lympne. October 22—Arrived Bagdad. October 23—Arrived Buohire. x October 24 —Arrived Jask. October 28 —Arrived Calcutta. October 30—Arrived Rangoon. October 31—Arrived Bangkok. November I—Arrived1 —Arrived Singapore. November 2—Arrived Batavia. November 3 —■ Arrived Sourabaya and Bima. The airman, Oscar Garden, who reached Australia unheralded and unsung after 18 days from England, is a member of a Scottish family who settled in New Zealand after the war. The aviator will probably attempt a flight across the Tasman soon. No one was present to meet him when he landed three miles from Wyndham. The previous night he camped with blacks at Bima.
