HELPLESS STEAMER.
CREW IN JEOPARDY. RUDDER GONE, LIFEBOATS BROKEN united Press Assn.—Elec.. Tel. Copyright. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 2. A Japanese cargo steamer, the seiyo Maru, is wallowing helplessly in the North Pacific, south-west of the Aleutian Islands. A wireless message from the vessel received this evening stated that the 40 members of the crew can do nothing to save her and she is in a sinking condition, with her rudder gone and her lifeboats broken by the heavy seas. The captain of the Seiyo Maru wirelessed his position to the steamer California, which started to the rescue, but later had to be hove-to In a full gale. She will proceed to the aid of the disabled vessel when the wind moderates. The Seiyo Maru is a' steamer of 6550 tons, belonging to the Mansel Steamship Company of Toliio. She was built in 1913 by Russell, and Company at Port Glasgow.
