THOROUGHLY DESERVED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. Received Nov. 3, 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, November 2. Commenting on the Derby, the Herald says:—“Balloon King’s win was thoroughly deserved. Taking charge on entering the straight he had too much reserve for Veilmond, who considerably increased his task by running erratically over the last furlong, and twice impeding the progress of Miss Arrow. The only excuse for Veilmond, who was also beaten into second place in the Sydney Derby, was that he was not good enough.” DEATH OF CRAGFORD. MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. The racehorse Cragford died to-day from internal trouble. Cragford, a four-year-old gelding by Eastern Monarch from Cena, won the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick last month, the time, 2m -435, constituting an Australian and New Zealand record. By winning this race he completed a sequence of five successes and the Caulfield Crp was his next mission. Although he looked very poor in condition he ran a great race, finishing fourth. Later he was scratched for the Melbourne Cup and all other Flemington engagements.
