FIVE SHILLINGS “TOTE.”

OPPOSED TO THE PROPOSAL. OPINION IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Saturday. “ i am very much opposed to the proposal of the Takapuna Jockey Club to sell five-shilling totalisator tickets at its forthcoming spring meeting,” said Mr J. Rowe, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, last evening. “ some people are doing their best to bring down the stakes all the time and I think this is the worst thing they have ever started,” he said. Asked whether he thought the Auckland Trotting Club would introduce the sale of five-shilling tickets, Mr Rowe said he hoped no such action would be taken in his lifetime. Mr D.' McLeod, president of the Avondale Jockey Club, refused to make any comment on the development. A prominent racing authority expressed the opinion yesterday that it was a very retrograde step.

FEELING IN CANTERBURYNOT LIKELY TO BE COPIED. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s innovation is not likely to be copied in Canterbury according to Mr F. C. Cother, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club. “ The adoption of the five shillings totalisator has not been suggested for Christchurch and I have not heard of it being mooted by any other club in New Zealand,” said Mr Collier. “So far as the Canterbury Jockey Club is concerned the provision of the smaller totalisator would necessitate extensive alteration to the electric totalisator and great expense which the club Is not in a position to meet.”
