PADDINGTON BY-ELECTION. EMPIRE CRUSADER RETURNED. LABOURITE BADLY BEATEN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright; (Received Nov. 1, 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 31. The by-election for the South Paddington seat, rendered vacant through the death by drowning of Right Hon, H. D. King- (Conservative), whilst yachting off the South of England, resulted: Vice-Admiral E. A. Taylor ' (Empire Crusader) .... 11,209 Sir Henry Lidiard (Con.) .. 10,268 Miss Evans (Labour) ... . 7,944 Mrs Stewart Richardson .. 494 The last-named forfeits her deposit. LESSON OF THE POLL. SUPPORT FOR EMPIRE TRADE. STRAIGHT-OUT POLICY FAVOURED United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received Nov. 1, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 31. Vice-Admiral E. A. Taylor, who won the South Paddington election as an Independent Conservative, championing Lord Beaverhrook’s campaign, was commander of H.M.S. Renown during the Prince of Wales’- trips to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 1919 and 1920. The Beaverbrook press claims the decision is a -great triumph for Empire trade. '' The Evening Standard deduces the total Conservative poll, showing a majority of 14,027 over Labour, shows that the Government’s policy at the Imperial Conference is not making firmer its feeble hold on the electors’ confidence. The newspaper .editorially says the official Conservative candidate stood for a vague policy of postponement, promising only a quota, while ViceAdmiral Taylor stood for the full definite plan of Empire free trade, including a response to the Dominion’s offer-and fiscal justice to British agriculture, both being based on duties on foreign foodstuffs. The Conserv-' alive Party still has power to give the whole country a similar chance of supporting a definite straight-forward policy of Empire trade instead of a vague wavering only.
