UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD
WORKERS’ REPRESENTATIVES. PROTEST BY LABOUR UNIONS. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. A deputation from the Trades Hail waited on the Hon. \V. Taverner, Minister of Public Works, and protested strongly against the seletion of workers’ representatives on the Unemployment Board being in (he hands of the Minister alone. Mr J. Robinson declared: “Everybody will think that the reason the Minister will not allow the unions to vote is that lie wished to make the selection himself, and to appoint men the Cabinet can r<rty on to do Hie job the Government wished them to do and not in the interests of the people they are supposed to represent." H was also argued that the lime of closing nominations of workers’ representatives should bo extended for a month., Unless Ihe unions were, given - a .selection vole Ihe labour organise I ions would have nothing Lo do with Ihe board. Mr Taverner said Ihe claims wore reasonable, and lie would place Ihem before his colleagues. The (lovernmenl’s desire was lo obtain the cooperation of all sections.
