ASSAULT AT DANCE.

MENACE WHEN IN LIQUOR. ONE MAN KNIFED. _ * SENTENCED TO. REFORMATORY. (Special to the Times.) lIUNTLY, Friday. An altercation outside a dance hall, recently in which a knife was drawn and injury infijeted to one of the participants, had Its sequel in "the Iluntly Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Robert Williamson, of Pukekapia, was charged with assaulting one Edward Leonard Green on October 4, and further with using indecent language. s , ’Mr F. FI. Levien, S.M., presided. It was shown . that the charges arose out of an argument at the olose of a dance. Defendant alleged that Green bumped him during the course of the evening and he met Green outside and entered into a wordy altercation. Defendant was under the influence of liquor and drew a knife inflicting injury to one of Green's hands. A bystander, named Manson West, of Huntly, then took a hand and snatched the knife, which was open and covered with blood, froifc Williamson. West administered a sound thrashing to defendant, who further threatend both parties that he would look for them. This, was not Williamson’s first appearance for a similar disturbance.

In convicting defendant, His Worship remarked that he was a menace, and when he got possession of liquor was totally irresponsible. He had, however, a duty to pei’form to the public, and every precaution must he taken to see that'patrons were protected from larrikins of this type. As if was not his first appearance and he had been previously warned he would be sentenced to one year’s detention in a reformatory, and cohvicted and discharged on the first charge.
