LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The evergreen celebration of Hallowe'en, honoured by Scottish people the world over, will be observed this evening. About twenty unemployed returned soldiers from the Hamilton district will leave for Kawhia on Monday to engage on road relief works arranged by the Labour Department. At a meeting of the Waikato branen of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last night, it was decided to leave the appointment of a representative of the association on the Unemployment Board in the hands of the Dominion executive. With King George’s consent it has been arranged that his speech at the opening of the Indian Round Table Conference on November 12 shall be broadcast from all British broadcasting stations, including SSW, the ■ Empire short-wave station. Subsequent speeches, including that of the Prime Minister, Mr MacDonald, will also be broadcast. That the Auckland City Council, by permitting the holding of entertainments on Sunday evenings, was running the risk of introducing the seven days week was the view expressed by Mr A. J. Entricari last evening, when the council discussed the question of refusing future permits for Sunday evening concerts. Widely divergent views were expressed and • finally the matter was referred back to the Finance Committee. The Waikato Cricket Association recently decided that if for any reason matches in the senior B. and juniorgrades were not played on the day or days allotted for them they would be treated as draws. As the opening of the season was postponed owing to wet weather this ruling will not apply for opening games, which will be the same as those allotted for last Saturday. That a few years would- see a generation of young people who were entirely ignorant of the drania and had never seen a play outside the screen, was stated by Mrs F. Prenton, producer of three plays presented by the St. George’s Dramatic Club last evening. It was because of the danger of this, she added, that the club was attempting .to interest youth in the works of recognised dramatists. A number of revised retail prices for meat will be adopted in Auckland to-morrow. All lines of pork except sausages have been reduced a penny a pound. Spring lamb will be sold at the following prices:—Leg and loin, Is 4d per lb; hindquarter, is 3d; forequarter, is. Consequent on the fall in the values of spring lambs at the Addington market the retail price to the public at Christchurch will be reduced by 2d per lb. The retail prices of mutton and beef will remain unaltered, although the market ■values for beef yesterday advanced slightly.
