CRIME IN SYDNEY.
TAXI-MEN HELD UP.i NOW ARMING THEMSELVES. As the result of the frequent holdups during recent months, taxi-drivers in Sydney have taken the precaution of carrying as little -money as possible with them at night time. Some of the drivers also have secured gun licenses, and never leave their garages unless armed. Thomas Tunbridge, a taxi-driver, of Abercombe Street, Redfern, is the latest victim of hold-up men. The oilier night he was menaced with a revolver, and compelled lo hand over all the money he had, which amounted Lo only 6s. While in the city, Tunbridge was engaged by two well-dressed young men to drive them lo Pyrmont. On reaching Mount Street, one of the passengers said, “ Tills will do,” and Tunbridge alighted to open the door. As lie did so wiiat he look to be a revolver was pressed against his ribs. The two men (lien jumped out of the taxi, and, adopting threatening altitudes, said, “Come on! Give me all you’ve got, and be lively about it!’’ Escape Foiled, Tunbridge made a step towards the driver's seat, but was quickly stopped, j and a revolver was again pressed; against Ids ribs, lhe bandit threatening ' to drill a hole through him if he moved; again.
The odds being against him, Tunbridge took Os from his pocket, and handed it to one of the men, saying, “ That’s all I’ve got.” After securing the cash, the bandits made off and were soon lost in the darkness. Tunbridge then drove to Clarence Street Police Station, where he reported the hold-up.
