AMUSING MOCK COURT.
DEBATING SEASON ENDB. “BREACH OF PROMISE SUIT.” High revel took place at the windup evening of the season of the Hamilton Debating Club last evening, when a mock court and social evening was held before a large attendance of members of the Workers’ Educational Association and their friends. The principal action on the calendar was a breach of promise suit, Flossie Green (Miss M. Anchor) v. Augustus Smith (Mr W. S. Jordan). Other roles were:—Judge, Mr F. A. de la Mare; counsel for plaintiff, Mr J. H. Gittos; counsel for defendant, Mr C. F. Sherley; witnesses, Mr A. H. Ward and Mr T. H. Chester; clerk of the court, Mr C. C. Tidmarsh; policeman, Mr A. Buckland. The jury found for the plaintiff and awarded the full amount of the damages claimed, £IOOO. Much of the cross-examination was impromptu, and the audience was frequently convulsed with laughter, the sallies from the counsel and witty remarks from the bench arousing a good deal of mirth. After several other “charges” had been dealt .with, the evening was given over to old-time dancing, which continued until a late hour. A dainty supper was served by the ladies’ committee, organised by Miss Anchor.
