HOUSEHOLD HINTS.

Linen that is worn threadbare can be effectively darned by machine stitching. For tablecloths and sheets .his is much stronger and more durable than hand darning. Mirrors can be cleaned of marks if .übbed with a piece of flannel dampened with spirits of camphor. Finger marks on paint are quickly removed with a piece of chamois leather dipped in paraffin.. Plated articles and silver are easily cleaned by washing in hot soapy water to which a little ammonia is added. If they are stained, a line paste made with ground white starch mixed with liquid ammonia should be used. Apply the paste carefully with a soft piece of flannel. Clean any engraved portions with the aid of a fine silvercleaning brush. Turpentine added to starch helps the iron to run smoothly and also gives a high gloss to the clothes. A few drops only should be used at a time. Turpentine will also remove, tar stains. Apply a paste of fuller's earth mixed with turpentine, benzine or petrol. Leave until dry. Then brush with a stiff brush. Repeat if necessary. Umbrella frames will never rust if before the umb'rella is used a piece of rag saturated with oil is wrapped round the stick, close to the wire. Open the umbrella and leave standing for a few minutes, then rub. each spoke with the rag. When not in use slip the rolled umbrella into a case to prevent the edges from becoming rubbed. . Vegetable. marrow left over, from a previous meal will be as good as when freshly cooked if it is put into boiling water until hot through. To give extra flavour drain,- cover with grated cheese', and put in the oven for a few minutes before serving.

Water-colour paint marks on finished silks and delicate fabrics- that cannot be washed should be carefully sponged with muslin wetted with glycerine, and the latter then taken out with benzine. This will not harm coloured fabrics.
