BURNED TO DEATH.
.VERDICT AT THE INQUEST. GALLANT ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. <By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTN N., Wednesday. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of William Mitchell, who lost his life when a lire occurred at his residence in the early hours of Sunday morning. Nurse Fraser stated that she was employed by deceased to nurse his daughter. Shortly after midnight Witness found the house afire. She awakened the others, and all got out safely. Later deceased returned to the house for some purpose. Constable Grant stated that deceased was found in a sitting position in the bedroom of his invalid daughter. Dr. Putnam deposed that deceased had been suffering from heart trouble. On the night of the Are Deputy-Super-intendent Milverton, of the brigade, went inside the building at the risk of his life, to endeavour to get deceased. Death was due to suffocation and burning. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, adding that he was satisfied that every effort had been made by the brigade to rescue him.
