WINTER MEETING CLOSES.

AUrORA BOREALIS AGAIN.

STATISTICS FOR THE FIXTURE. The three days’ Winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was concluded at Ellerslie on Saturday in damp weather and on a holding track. The leading event of the day, the York Handicap, was won by Maori Boy, while Aurora Borealis, was successful in the Winter Steeplechase, Taumai, who got the verdict in the Campbell Hurdles, was credited with a win each of the three days in the department. The eight acceptors came out for the Tamaki Steeplechase for which Master Lu was £360 better supported than Lucess, each horse having a win over country earlier at the meeting. They finished as named, with a length between them. St. Warrigal was ten lengths away, with Marita fourth. Lucilius, Copey and Rahepoto fell.

There were six starters in the Orakei Hurdle race, Carlaris being nearly £IOO better fancied than Luminary. The latter took charge early and was never headed. Rongo was ten lengths off, with, Quincoma a poor third, and Respirator down the straight. St. Ames and Carlaris fell. The York Handicap. Havering, missea his engagement In the York Handicap in which there were fourteen starters. Seatown was £IBO better backed than Standfast. The eighth fancy, Maori Boy, scored impressively to pay a return of double figures. Seatown was a length away and a neck in front of Standfast, with Nassock fourth. The ten-carded contested the Winter Steeplechase in which Ponjola carried £226 more than the Great Northern’ winner, Aurora Borealis. The latter ran to the lead at the hilltop on the final round and won by live lengths from Mashoor, with Airtight fll'teen lengths away. Ponjola Was fourth, with Pendavies and Young Thurnham the others to get round. There were five starters in the Campbell Hurdles in which Taumai was £SOO better favourite than Mister Gamp, with Mangani third in request. Taumai, despite the s fact that he did not jump well got up to win by a length from Prince Lu, when the latter was looking all over a winner. Mangani got third money after being remounted when he fell at the last fence. Mister Gamp fell at the fourth fence and Daylight came down- over him. Lucy Rose and Big Bertha were withdrawn from the Visitors’ Handicap for which twelve sprinters lined up. . Havering was £530 better fancied than Nancy Lee and this was the order in which they finished, three-quarters of a length separating them. Taku Tama came fast in the closing stages to get third place, with British King fourth. The Cambridge owned Chromadyne was an odds on favourite in the Carbine Plate with £2200 more than Te Hoia , who was next in demand. The favourite got home by a length from Snow Prince, who was at double figures to win. Te Hoia was third, and Goldlike heading the rest. CONCLUDING RESULTS. VISITORS’ HANDICAP. Havering (£2106), Nancy Lee (£1635) and Marble King ((£1235) were backed in that order. Flying Prince led early from Marble King, Dave, Abbess and Nancy Lee. Marble King took charge after two furlongs and showed the way into the straight to Dave, Abbess, Flying Prince, Nancy Lee, Havering and British King. Havering stayed on best to win by three-quarters of a length from Nancy Lee who was half a length in front of Taku Tama. Chromadyne was backed down inside even money with £3645, w r hile Te Hoia £1445£ and Grattus £1329 were in most request of the others. Snow Prince was ninth choice with £472. Sir Mond took charge early from Spring Abbey, Mon Star Chromadyne, Snow Prince and The Sun. Snow Prince moved up fast and was with Chromadyne into the straight, where Sir Mond, Te Hoia and The Sun were also prominent. Chromadyne got the verdict by a length from Snow Prince, with Te Hoia ten lengths away third. Goldlike was fourth, with The Sun, Spring Abbey, Sir Mond and Unoco following. Time, I min 49 3-ssecs. TOTALISATOR RETURNB. £184,560 FOR THE MEETING. DECREASE OF £36,582 10s. On Saturday £55,830 was invested, a decrease of £6451 10s compared with the figures for the corresponding day of last season’s Winter meeting. For the three days of the latest fixture the totalisator receipts were £184,560 against £221,142 10s last season, a decrease of £36,582 10s.

Cook had weighed out a rider for Royal Visitor for the Carbine Plate at Ellerslie on Saturday he effected the sale of the horse to Mr. C. Dawson owner of Pompeius. Royal Visitor was then withdrawn and was handed over to A:-P. Brady, who is to prepare him at Te Rapa for future racing. SUPER RULER RETURNING. Super Ruler, owned by Messrs. R. J. and H. D. Matthews, of Hamilton, is returning from Sydney this week. This two-year-old by Chief Ruler-Boynette was trained by G. Price at Randwick. He showed speed in the few starts he had on the other side and promises to develop into a useful sort. Super Ruler is a full brother to Ruling Chief. Ruling Chief, who was recently purchased by Mr. Clive Matthews from Messrs. R. J. and 11. D. Matthews, is to be trained in'future by A. Cooke. The horse was railed from Frankton F. FOSTER’S RECOVERY! AUCKLAND, Monday. The jockey F. Foster, who was injured in a fall when schooling Itawhetu at Ellerslie on May 31, and had to forego his engagement to ride Aurora Borealis in the Great Northerns, has been discharged from hospital. He was present at the races on Saturday, walking with the aid of sticks, and stated he was hopeful of be able to ride again in a week or two. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. HUSTLER’S CANTERBURY* CUP. SYDNEY, June 8. The race for the Canterbury Cup resulted as follows: HUSTLER, 7.2 (Davidson) 1 VERTOY, 8.6 (England) 2 INDUCEMENT, 8.0 (Bartle) 3 Twelve started, including Gesto, who was prominent in the early stages and then faded away. Won by three lengths. Time, 2.421.
