OBITUARY

EMILY MAY WATERS. It will come as a great shock to her many friends to learn of the death at a Hamilton hospital of, Mrs Emily May Waters, wife of Mr R, B. Waters, of Thames Street, Claudelands. The late Mrs Waters has resided in Waikato for the greater part ,of’ her life and was the daughter of the late Mr Daniel Edwards, one of. the pioneers of Hamilton. Mrs Waters was taken ill a little over a week ago and entered hospital, where she underwent an operation from which she never recovered. She is survived by her husband and two young daughters, who will receive much sympathy in their bereavement. The funeral will be held at the Waikumete CemeJtery to-morrow (Friday). A service will be held at Hamilton this evening, at 7.40 o’clock. MRS J. BARKLEY. An old resident of New Zealand, Mrs Janet Mary Barkley, wife, of Mr Joseph Barkley, of * O’Neill Street, Claudelands, died suddenly at her residence last evening. Mrs Barkley, who was born'in Ireland, came to New Zealand as a child. After living in Dunedin and Westport she and her husband came to the North Island and engaged in farming operations at Manuwera, Matangi and Walton. They came to live in Hamilton some months ago. ' Mrs Barkley is survived by her husband, one son, Mr R. Barkley, and two\ daughters, Mrs R. F. Haycock •ivonport) and Mrs L. C. Barkley (Hamilton). A-brother is Mr R. E. Hayes, C.M.G., and there are three grandchildren. The funeral will take place at the Hamilton East Cemetery on Saturday. MR GEORGE CLAYTON DEVERELL. One of the early settlers of Te Aroha district, Mr George Clayton Deverell, passed away on Friday at the age of 85 years. The late Mr Deverell was born in Oxfordshire, and in 1885 came out to New Zealand with his wife and family. He settled on the land at Tauranga, where he remained for three years, and then took up a block at Katikati. After farming there for two years he came to Te Aroha, and for some years carried on farming operations at Ruakaka. In addition/he owned a carrying business, and for a considerable time had a contract for carrying quartz from the Tui mine to the wharf. After farming in Taranaki for a few years he retired, and before Anally settling in Te Aroha resided at Waihi and Paeroa. In recent years he conducted the Te Aroha railway bookstall-

Deceased is survived by three sons and three daughters. His wife died in 1910.
