In a series of divisions in whicH the Government was saved on two occasions by the casting vote of the Speaker, the second reading of the Civil Service Salaries Cut Bill was eventually carried by 45 votes to 43. Stevens, said the diminution of taxable incomes in this State for the coming year would amount to 22 per cent., while the savings, including the reduction in the public servants’ salaries, would aggregate £2,067,000.
