At a meeting of the Hamilton Licensing Bench yesterday, the license of the Franlcton Junction Hotel was : renewed.

The first of this season’s lambs were born on the farm of Mr T. Martin, of Rotorua, president of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a few days ago. There are three lambs on the property.

A decision to raise its fee for hospital treatment from 9s to 12s a day, which is the charge of all other large hospital boards of the Dominion, was made at a meeting of the Auckland board yesterday. Half rates will be charged for children under 14 years of age.

The Mahana, which arrived at Dunedin yesterday, did not call at Pitcairn Island, consequently it did not bring ■back the two men who, stopping too long to see friends off, were carried away by the Corinthic from Wellington on April 9 and landed on Pitcairn Island.

A boar at the farm of Mr Evan Jones, of Toko, seven miles from Stratford, attacked and wounded four valuable horses which were running in a paddock with it. One horse, valued at £SO, was so severely injured that it had to be destroyed, and another - may have to be killed because of the severity of its injuries.

The clearing sale on account of Mr V. H. Nolan, of Roto-o-rangi, advertised by Messrs Dalgety and Company in conjunction with the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile will be held on Friday next, 23rd inst., commencing at 10.30 a.m. It will be confined to one day, though it was originally advertised for Friday and Saturday.

The Hamilton Fire Brigade received a call to an outbreak in the stock pens of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association on the association’s grounds at Claudelands, at 6.30 last evening. The brigade was quickly on the scene and the fire was extinguished before much damage was done. The cause of the fire is not known.

A message from St. Johns, Newfoundland, says that in the by-elec-tion at Lewisporte for a seat in the Legislative Assembly Lady Squires, wife of the Prime Minister, Sir Richard Squires, was elected by a large majority. Lady Squires is the first woman to be elected since the passing of the Franchise Act in 1924.

A decision to allow the Auckland Cycle Club and the Manukau Amateur Cycle Gibb to conduct races under certain restrictions in the Mangere circuit until the end of the season, when the clubs would have to find routes outside the county, was reached at a meeting yesterday of the Manukau County Council.

The chief postmaster, Hamilton, notifies .that unless telephone rental for the current half-year is paid by -noon on Friday, telephones of defaulting subscribers will be disconnected, and a restoration fee of 5s will be charged. To suit subscribers a system has been introduced by which they may pay rental monthly in advance instead of half-yearly. The monthly rental scale is slightly in excess of one-twelfth of the annual charge.
