FEDERAL FINANCE.
EFFECT OF THE TARIFF. A DEFICIT ANTICIPATED. United Press Assn.-Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 20, 10.10 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 20The effect of the Ministry’s tariff surcharges and prohibition is already being felt. To balance the estimated revenue of £44,450,000 from customs and excise duties nearly £7,500,000 must be collected before the end of June, but it is unlikely that more than £6,000,000 will be received from these sources. The treasurer, Hon. E. G. Theodore, budgeted for a surplus, but it is now expected that there will be deficit of from £1,000,000 to £1,500,000.
