Springs played four men short till the end of the flrfet quarter. The game went in Elstow’s favour from the first, and could be described as one-sided, as most play took place under the Spring’s goal-line. Rollex, for Elstow, dashed across from the tight to register the first score, which Stewart neatly converted. Ivinn and Stocklcy, veterans of last year’s reps, were well to the fore In the Elstow scrum department. From a penally award Stewart had a successful shot at goal, which made the score— Elstow 8, Springs 0. Though hooking well Springs failed to keep out the Green invasion; and change-over relieved them from a nasty position. Fortunes were somewhat reversed in the new spell when Jacobs placed Springs in a good fighting position by a nippy little sprint Into Elstow’s territory. Play became open and Rangl and Moir combining, came within an ace of scoring when the leather bounced out. Realising the benefits of open play, the Springs had greater success in trusting matters to their backs. Boldero gave a good account of himself on the wing and also narrowly missed a penalty goal. Halftime found the score unaltered.

W. Stewart, early in the second [half, found the bar from a penalty award and a moment later the Green scrum took charge of the ball and carried matters well upheld. Here P. Stewart, Springs’ full-back, was given an anxious time and forced down three times in succession. Elstow were afforded great opportunities to score, but lost them on account of bad back handling. Wagstaffe at length battled Over and scored. The kick at goal failed.—Elstow 14, Springs 0. In the last spell Boldero’s fine mark gave Springs momentarily advantage, but Elstow again secured and rushed matters to Springs’ last line of defence. Here Stockley shot across and the try was converted by Stewart, — Elstow 19, Springs 0. Matters warmed up considerably as the quarter drew to a close, Elstow successfully smothering open play and Springs attempting to loosen the play. Fast, following up gave Rollex a splendid chance, but owing to lack of support the move was nullified. The game closed with the scores unaltered. Mr T. Atkins was referee. THIRD GRADE. Springs v. City. This was an evenly-contested game, in which some really fine flashes of play were witnessed. Horgan, for Springs, scored two tries, converting one himself. For City the two unconverted tries were notched by Pilkington and Burns.
