GIRL ASSAULTED.

FOUND UNCONSCIOUS. EVIDENCE OF SEVERE STRUGGLE. HAMILTON JOCKEY ARRESTED. About one o’clock on Sunday morning, a pedestrian passing along Ward Street heard a girl screaming on a vacant section in front of the Hamilton Technical School. He hurried to the spot, where he alleges he saw a young man and a _ girl on the ground. He enquired what was the matter, when the young man, he says, threatened to “ clean him up ” if he did not go away. The man left to bring the police, but being unable to find a constable he got the assistance of a taxi driver. Together they returned to the spot, where they found the girl lying unconscious, the man having decamped.

Yesterday afternoon DetectiveSergeant J. Thompson and Detective White arrested a jockey named Claude James Regan, aged 21, of Hamilton, who appeared before Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., at Hamilton,' to-day, charged with rape. A remand till the 30th. inst., was granted. The girl, who was placed in a taxi and taken to the Waikato • Hospital in an unconscious condition, is much improved this morning. At the spot where the assault allegedly occurred, there are evidences of a severe struggle 'having taken place. Bail was not applied for.
