Poppy Day collections in Dunedin yesterday totalled about £ISOO. Country returns and also those from surrounding districts have still to come in, and record takings are anticipated.
The Anchor Company’s steamer Alexander, which went aground at the French Pass early on Tuesday morning, was refloated on yesterday morning’s tide.
A young man named Albert Edward Lee was remanded at Hamilton to-day till the 16th inst. on a charge of stealing a saxophone, the property of Victor Caleb Low. The police stated that a further charge would be preferred against accused.
Flags on Government buildings and offices throughout the Dominion are being flown at half-mast to-day, the burial day of the late Queen of Sweden.
A branch of the Spiritualistic Church will be opened in the Alexandra Hall Hamilton to-morrow evening. The services will be conducted by Mr and Mrs Mills, late of Nelson, and the Spiritualistic Church, Wellington.
The local branch of the League of Nations’ Union has received from the head office at Geneva numerous interesting books and pamphlets dealing with the activities of the League during the past year.
For the year ended March 31, fifteen permits w r ere served by the Te Aroha Borough Council for new buildings costing £17,788. For alterations and additions, thirty-nine permits were served, the cost of the works totalling £4,217.
