CHILDREN’S VERSES.

THE FAIRIES’ FOREST. (Sent by “Golden Daffodil,” Karapiro.) I see a little forest; 'Tis very small and green, And there are winding pathways That wander in between. It is so still and silent You’d really never know That there are little fairies A-dancing to and fro. But now the wind blows softly, The tree-tops sway and toss— The fairies have forsaken Their forest of green moss I FOUNTAIN FAIRIES. (Sent by “Lavender," Hamilton.) There are fairies in the fountain, Dancing gaily in the spray; Through the sparkling crystal showers I can watch them as they play. I often wish I were a fairy, So that I could dance all day; But supposing I grew weary I could never run away. So I’m just content to watch them Playing on a summer’s day, Dancing in the sunlit showers Of the glistening fountain-spray.

, SUNBEAM FAIRIES. I I wandered down 'beside the pool, For, oh! ’twas such a lovely day. I hid behind a bush to peep At sunbeam fairies at their play. They sang quaint songs and danced about— Such gladness it was good to see—< And soon they gave a joyous shout; They’d spied me there and beckoned me. They had a feast to welcome mo. 1 joined their spread in merry moodj The crystal air and watches blue Were fairy wine and fairy food. WHO IS SILVIA? Who is Silvia? What is she, That all our Swains commend her? Holy, fair, and wise is she; The heavens such grace did lend her t That she might admired be. Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness; Love doth to her eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And, being helped, inhabits there. Then to Silvia let us sing, That Silvia is excelling. She excels each mortal thing Upon the dull earth dwelling; To her let us garlands bring. —William Shakespeare.
