TOURNEY AT CAMBRIDGE. TWO SHIELD COMPETITIONS. TE ARC)HA’S GOOD SHOWING. An interesting Are brigade tourney took place at 'Cambridge on Saturday, in the presence of a fair attendance of spectators. Two competitions were bold for the Howdqn Shield, held by Cambridge last year, and for the HillMaloncy Shield, the holders of which were Otorohanga last year. Teams representing eight brigades from the South Auckland districts took part, and some fine displays were witnessed. \ ' A The Te Aroha representatives put up a fine performance in annexing both .trophies, having a substantial margin of points in each competition. Te Kuiti were runners-up in the Ilowden Shield, while Te Awamutu and Otorohanga tied for a similar hon-. our in the Hill-Maloney Shield. The competitions were well run, and the management reflected credit on ’the local brigade and visiting officers associated. Points for Shields. The points obtained for the shields competed for were as follows : Howden Shield.—Te Aroha 3i, Te Kuiti 19J, Otorohanga 18J, Cambridge 174, Morrinsville 16, Te Awamutu 15 i, Matamata 7. Shergold, L. Warne and A. Zenovich). SMOKE CONCERT. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. As a fitting conclusion to the .successful Fire Brigade sports held at Cambridge on Saturday afternoon a smoke concert was tendered the visiting firemen in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Representatives of the municipality and a number of local citizens were also the guests of the local brigade. The Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestley), who occupied the chair, in opening the proceedings, congratulated the brigades on "the excellent performance they had n-i ven that afternoon. He said he had just returned from Invercargill,’ where that citv’s brigade had given a special demonstration for the Municipal' Conference. He assured ihe liremen present that, their exhibition had more than equalled that of a permanent brigade. He expressed his appreciation of the line spirit in which volunteer brigades gave of their time and labour for the good of the community. Mr F. Lye, M.P., welcomed the visitors to Cambridge, and hoped they had had a profitable and enjoyable day. He congratulated the Te Aroha Brigade on the' fine performance they had put up in winning both the Howden and Maloney Shields. A Fins Demonstration. One important toast was that of the visiting brigades, proposed by Captain 11. Yausc. He said tiiat it had been a great pleasure to Cambridge to have had them present on Saturday, and hoped they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. He felt sure they would go away in good spirits, whether thef had been successful or not. ■ In reply, Superintendent Phillips, of Otorohanga, thanked the Cambridge Brigade for their hospi-auty, and congratulated them on what he considered was the best run demonstration he had attended in his many years in the brigade. Representatives from the other visiting brigades also spoke, thanking the Cambridge men for the good time that had been accorded them. Presentation of Trophies. During the evening the Mayor presented the shields won by Te Aroha. lie Congratulated the team on the excellent performance they had given, and said it was the opinion of ail that the best men had won. In reply Deputy-Superintendent Walsh thanked His Worship, and complimented the Cambridge Brigade again on the excellent manner in which they had conducted the day’s programme. Numerous trophies were also presented by Mr F. Lye, for the individual events. The evening was interspersed with a fine programme given by the following artists: Messrs J.. Haworth, Wooldridge, W. Lane, A. Pafcon, T. H. Hampshire, W. Weatherell, J. Davis, and a brass quartette.
