MANGAONUI STREAM.
STRAIGHTENING AND CLEANING. WAIKATO COUNTY DISCUSSION. COMMISSION TO .BE SET UP. The cost of straightening and cleaning of willows in the Mangaonui Stream occupied the lengthy consideiation of the Waikato County Council to-day. A communication received from the Minister of Public Works slated that in response to the request from the Waikato 'County for a grant towards the work, lie had made available a grant of £3OO (£1 for £i). This sum would be available as soon as the county’s proposals had been approved by the district engineer at Auckland. Earlier in the meeting it was decided by a four to three majority that the council find £IOO out of the general fund and the Cambridge and Tauwliare ridings £SO each. The other £IOO would have to be found by Hie combined drainage boards of Eureka, Fencourt and Ilautapu. Or. ,1. A. Sampson concurred with Cr. T. 11. Henderson Unit the council had made a dangerous move in contributing- to the cosi out of the general account, as they might, in his opinion, be opening tip a bad precedent. Later in the meeting, however, on advice coining to hand that the Fencourt. .Drainage Board? was opposed to contributing towards the cost of the work, it was decided to rescind the council’s previous offer and that the Government be asked to set up a commission to go into the matter.
