PLUNKET FAIR.

SUCCESSFUL EVENT

HOST OF ATTRACTIONS. SPORTS FOR CHILDREN. / •The Plunket Fair opened very Successfully to-day. Early in the morning stall-holders a'nd their, willing helpers were busy preparing lor the big business which soon commenced,: and the green sward between the public library and the Plunket rooms was dotted with tents. A table in a big marquee groan'ed under the weight of tempting vegetables and luscious fruits at one end, flanked by a riot of many-hued flowers, and further on samples of exquisitelyfashioned handiwork. Cakes and other culinary dainties by the mere appearance invited one to buy. There is something there for everyone, and everyone should be there, to aid in the great work of the Society whose name is now famous in the four quarters of the globe, and taken as a criterion of what is best in its field of work by every nation. Every penny spent at the Plunket Fair to-day will go towards the mailing of New Zealand’s babies the bonniest that possibly could be. One noteworthy feature or the stalls is that “lollies” are conspicuous by their absence. As is well known, the Plunket Society, as the result of the conclusions of the most eminent medical men and child workers, does not favour the giving of sweets to young children. Therefore* instead of a “lolly" stall, are things equally as good as far as delicious taste is concerned, and infinitely better for one .—dates, raisins, nuts, apples, oranges, and many more of nature’s bounties.

The Sports. I Curing the afternoon a varied and entertaining programme of sports and amusements for children of Plunket age is being held on an adjoining lawn, in addition to the amusements for young folk and growntups. Mrs A. H. Tompkins is the president of the Society, Mrs Vickery the hon. secretary, and .Mrs Page the hon. treasurer. Mrs Tompkins expressed to a Waikato Times reporter the committee’s deep appreciation of the assistance given by the advisory committee, which she characterised as wonderful. Mr Paul’s help in the erection of the tents, etc., he lent, was invaluable, as was that of Mr 1 arrell} and Mr Clark. The stallholders are as follows, assisted in each case by a band of helpers. —• Amusement committee, Mesdames Hay, Gordon Reid and Jenkins; fortune telling, Mrs Gibbons; model lunch, Mrs Willoughby and Miss Wright; bran tub, Mesdames Seifert, Budd, and Jolly copl drinks and ice creams, Mesdames •Clive, Mathews, and J. McNicol and Miss F McEldowney; childrens nut and fruit stall, Mrs H. Luxford; work stall Mesdames Cowles, Mitchell, Fowler, and Sheppard; cake stall, Mesdames Ramsay, Bary Buokland; produce stall, Mesdames Chitty, Coles McNicol, Bullock, and Platt, and Mr and Mrs Smith; old clothes, Mesdames Minchin and Kemble; tea stall, Mes- | dames Beale, Ewart Brown, Reeves, -'Ferguson, and Honeyfleld; flowers ' and plants, Mesdames Stace, Tudhope and Nicholls. *, • ... A turkey has been presented for the dinner-guessing competition, in which is included a ham, vegetables, and •Excellent business has been done by the produce stall, the response from the schools being very generous. _
