COMMERCE CHAMBER.

MORRINSVILLE MEETING. FINANCIAL POSITION DISCUSSED. At the monthly meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce the president (Mr E. McGregor) presided over a fair meeting of members. The chairman reported that the matter of a second policeman for Morrinsville was being inquired into by the department. In reply to the chamber’s request for an alteration in the valuation of native lands, so as to make transfers simpler and less expensive, the Valuation Department replied that the matter had been referred to the Minister of Lands. The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce asked for information with regard to the cost of electric lighting In town. Financial Position. The secretary explained the'Anancial position of the chamber, 'l’he balance from last year was £7 17s 7d, and subscriptions collected were £l2 Is 6d. The amount paid out was £l6 2s, and the balance had ali'eady been spent. In order to run the business of the chamber successfully it was necessary either to get more members or increase the subscription. I’he chairman agreed with the suggestion. Several members pointed out the good workk the chamber had done, and said it would be a pity not to continue. In response to a request from the chairman for any suggestions for malting their meetings more interesting Mr Wyatt moved that the chairman and secretary draw up a programme of short addresses for meetings during the next few months.— Carried. A’he chairman reported that the Borough Council had had a new and very satisfactory plan of the town prepared, and had supplied the chamber with a copy. - Mr Hetherington suggested that the attention of the insurance companies should be called to the absence of Ares in the borough since the water service had been installed, and that all outbreaks had been quickly and successfully dealt with, with a view to a reduction in premiums. Town Clerk. The chairman suggested that some recognition by the chamber for his services to the town during his term of office should be made to Mr McKay, who had resigned his position and was leaving the district. Mr Wyatt moved that the chamber express its thanks to Mr McKay for the valuable work he had rendered. Mr Cargill seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Gifford thought that some public send-off should be arranged and a presentation made to Mr McKay, as a slight recognition of what he had done for the town.

-The chairman was asked to interview the Mayor and assure him of the support of the chamber in any such movement.

In view of the fact that the Minister of Lands was visiting the district next

Monday, and would receive deputations, it was suggested that the chamber wait on him and point out the necessity of taking steps to deal with the question of the rapid spread of ragwort in the district. Reduction of Railway Freights. Mr Hetherington referred to the fact that reductions in freight had been made to several towns, and he did not know why Morrinsville had been omitted. The matter was discussed at length, but no action was taken.
