MAUNGATAWHIRI STREAM.
GRANT FOR CLEARING WILLOWS. Advice that a grant of £3OO will be placed on the Estimates this session of Parliament for clearing willows from tlie lower reaches of the Mangatawhiri Stream has been received. It has been pointed out that such clearance would give the water a freer and quicker flow r to the Waikato River, with the result that flooding in the fertile Mangatkwhiri Valley, along the middle reaches of the stream, would be reduced. The Government lias agreed to make the grant on the assurance that the Franklin County Council will see that the work is properly maintained by preventing the regrowth of willows along the length cleared.
