DESTRUCTIVE FIRES.

OUTBREAK AT HILLCREST. CAR AND SHED DESTROYED. A TOTAL LOSS. Fire destroyed a motor car and shed, the property of Mr John McKenzie, in Hillorest Road, at about 8 o’clock last evening. The fire being out of the Hamilton Brigade's area, where no water was available, a small motor and a squad of men were despatched to assist as far as possible. The shed and car were a complete loss, there being no insurance on either. OUTBREAK AT TE KOWHAI. OLD LANDMARK DESTROYED. (Special to Times.) TE KOWHAI, Saturday. An outbreak of fire occurred in the Te Kowhai district on Friday at about 10 p.m., when the old residence by the Ohote oreek bridge was totally destroyed. The house, which was owned and occupied by Mr. Lester Jackson, was a well-known landmark. The owner’s loss in goods and equipment is said to be considerable, and it is not known whether the building carried any insurance. HALL DESTROYED. MYSTERIOUS FIRE. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, Saturday. The Matiero Town Hall was destroyed by fire early this morning and difficulty was experienced in saving the adjoining post office. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The hall was insured for £2OO in the State office and a cinema plant and engine, for £250 in tile Victoria office.
