AN INGENIOUS FRAUD
INSURANCE ON LUGGAGE. TWO BROTHERS CHARGED. (By Telegraph —Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Friday. Yesterday detectives arrested two brothers, Cecil William Mitchell (21), salesman, and Arthur Moir Mitchell (20), farm hand, on a charge that they attempted to obtain from the Insurance Office of Australia, Ltd., £IBO by falsely representing .that four bags of their belongings, covered by a policy for £IBO were lost.
When they appeared to-day counsel, who said accused came from the South, asked for a remand. The chief detective said accused conceived the idea of insuring the luggage with the company at Christchurch, which they left on September 30. One brother came to Auckland and took delivery of the luggage, which had been checked through, and the other came up later and said the bags had been lost and claimed insurance. Their bags were later found at Taupiri, where another brother lived. Both accused intended leaving for Sydney. "They are strangers to us,” concluded the chief detective,” and went under lictitious names. They are pretty smart fellows.” Accused were remanded till Friday on bail.
