RUGBY FOOTBALL.

WAIKATO UNION.

THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Waikato Rugby Union met last night, the chairman (Mr Booth) presiding. The Taupiri sub-union wrote asking for permission to play a match with Waipa on Saturday, August 31. Their application was confirmed. Territorial rights formed the basis of a protest from the Raglan subunion, which complained that players who had not been registered in the Raglan Union had been playing in games under their jurisdiction. The ur-ion asked that boundaries be defined between the Raglan and Taupiri sub-unions. Rules bearing on this matter were discussed, and a subcommittee consisting of Messrs Booth, Whiting and Thompson was set up to deal with the question. Mr Speight recommended that the two subunions concerned be asked to try to arrange an amicable settlement regarding the boundaries. A report on the game was received from the referee of a Finlay Cup match. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of thanks to the referee for his report, and it was decided to ask the Referees’ Association to rule that reports of all Finlay Cup matches be submitted to the union.

The Ranfurly Shield. Some time back the Waikato Rugby Union sent a challenge to the Wairarapa Union, holders of the Ranfurly Shield, to arrange a match for the trophy. Notification has been received from the union that the challenge has been accepted, but owing to the fact that Waikato owes Wairarapa a visit the fixture will not be considered as a match for the Ranfurly Shield, but as a return game. Strong exception was taken to the action of the Wairarapa Union in adopting this attitude. It was decided that a letter be sent to the union stating that the touring season of the Waikato Union is now completed, and that owing to unforeseen circumstances it has been found impossible to send a team south. The Wairarapa Union was asked to cancel the fixture, and at the same time the Waikato Unios enters an emphatic protest against the action of the shield holders in making the game a return match instead of a challenge for the trophy. A copy of the motion is to be sent to ihe New Zealand Union. Regarding the Waikato junior championship the Waipa sub-union wrote protesting against the action of the Waikato Union in asking the Waipa representatives to travel to Hamilton to defend their title. The Waipa delegate mentioned that since the protest had been lodged his union had discovered that a mistake had been made. Considerable discussion arose over the playing of the fixtures in this competition. It was moved that in the event of a draw in any game at the call of time two equal spells of ten minutes be played. Arrangements for the entertainment of the Wellington touring team which

will play Waikato at Hamil.ton on September 11 were left in the hands of the Hamilton sub-committee. The Hawke's Bay Union wrote expressing their appreciation of the reception and entertainment of their team during their visit to Hamilton. The chairman moved that all subunions be asked to hold their annual meetings before the end of March . each year. The date of the next meeting of the Waikato Rugby Union was set for Friday, September 20.
