PIRONGIA.

Meeting of Householders. A meeting of householders was called by the local school committee, and took place on Tuesday evening, Mr Buchanan (chairman of the school committee) presiding. Correspondence covering a long period was read by the chairman in order to give the meeting particulars of the position, after which he explained that the committee had exhausted every means to convince the Education Board that the matter of drainage was urgent and should be attended to without delay. “It seems to me,” .said the chairman, “that there is one law for the department and one for the Individual.” Notwithstanding the fact that the health officers had condemned the system at the local school over 12 months ago and had ordered the installation of a septic tank system, the Education Board absolutely refused to move in the matter unless the committee found upwards of £24 towards the cost.

“This demand,” said Mr Buchanan, in reply to a question, “is made by the board on the grounds that we will be relieved of certain charges which we are supposed’ to have to meet under the present system obtaining at the school, but as a matter of fact there are no charges because thero is In reality no system at the school. The outhouses were damaged some time ago, and it had not been possible to effect any but temporary repairs.” A suggestion that the committee should endeavour to find £l2 was not supported by the meeting, as it was contended that an appeal for funds for this purpose would not get support, and by the time the money was raised the dangerous insanitary condition would be worse owing to warm weather and the fact that the school was becoming a consolidated .school with a growing attendance.

A suggestion to take the matter without delay to the Minister was put forward by a householder. The meeting was inclined to take this course as the shortest way out of the difficulty, but after further discussion a resolution as follows was carried unanimously: "That this meeting of Pirongia householders is unanimously and emphatically of opinion that the Education Board should provide entirely at Its own expense and without delay the necessary sanitary improvements as recommended by the Health Department at the Pirongia school. Failing this they must accept full responsibility for any sickness that may result from the present insanitary condition." It was decided to forward the resolution lo the board at once. Failing satisfaction from the Education Board, the chairman indicated that the committee would take the matter to the Minister of Education, as any further delay would be highly dangerous.
