TE AROHA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. IMPORTANT MATTERS DISCUSSED. The Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Tc Aroha Borough Council, Crs. G. Hedge, D. McMahon, J. Cotter, \V. C. Kennedy, G. Frith, 11. J. Pease, \. Hamilton, and \V. E. Smith also being present. A petition was received from 13 Herriesville residents asking for removal of the borough rubbish tip, on the grounds that it is considered a public nuisance.—Referred to the Sanitary Committee, which will be asked 10 suggest a -new site if possible. A letter was read from the Chamber of Commerce approving of the action of the Piako Cuunty Council and the Borough council in making representations to the Government for improvement to Thompson’s track. Motor Camping Ground. The Chamber of commerce wrote that the Herriesville camping ground was not in a satisfactory condition, and asked whether a reply had been received from the Lanus and Survey Department -in regard to the property known as “Baine s Lease.” The -Mayor was of the opinion that the camp at ilcrriesvilie should be puL in order. No definite reply re Baine s Lease had been received. The Tc Aroha Dairy Company, Ltd., applied for a permit for an addition to its factory.—Approved, subject to the by-laws being complied with. The Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, quoted £45 for 5U copies of Hie plan of To Aroha on a scale of 4 chains to one inch. The Treasury advised Hie amount of Goldfields revenue for July was £‘2o ss. The Auckland Chamber of Commerce wrote that a special railway tour of the northern half of the Auckland province would take place in November. Te Aroha would be included in the places to' be visited. The- Quarry. The quarry foreman's report stated that for the four weeks to August 23, 345 J yards of metal had been crushed, at a cost of £B9 17s 2d. Cr. Cotter advocated an effort being made to secure orders for metal, and, failing this, he thought some of the men could be transferred to other borough works. Cr. Hedge said the quarry was not costing the ratepayers anything, as it was paying its way. Even if it only paid its way it was a great asset to tlie borough, as the metal used for the streets was charged at practically cost. 'fhe Mayor said he had been concerned in regard to the quarry for some time, as it was not working up to its capacity. He also was of the opinion that the Quarry Committee should get busy in regard to getting in orders for metal. Cr. Kennedy said there were district quarries producing metal of good quality. The report was adopted. Cr. Pease referred to the bad state of several business premises in the heart of the town, and he considered, with the summer close at hand, the Sanitary and Drainage Committee, and if possible the whole council, ..should make a visit of inspection early. The matter was referred to the Sanitary and Drainage Committee to report. Aviation. Cr. McMahon referred to the possibility of an Aero Club being formed. He thought Hie borough should have some control in such a metier, especially as regards site. He moved that the Minister of Defence should be written to for particulars bearing on the subject. The Mayor said he was waiting for legislation to be brought in governing aviation and the conduct thereof. ■ The motion was carried. It was decided that the council meetings be held monthly until further notice.
