Waikato, 4, v. Manawatu, 0. The game to-morrow between Wellington and Waikato will settle the destination of the shield, which Auckland has now lost. Auckland was defeated yesterday by Waikato.' OPENING DAY’S PLAY. NOTES AND COMMENTS. There was -some excellent football seen on Tuesday afternoon, when Wellington defeated Manawatu G—l, and Waikato defeated Auckland 2 —o. Wellington were small, hut quick on the ball. Waikato were a heavilybuilt team, and have strong left wingforwards, and the left half is a fine little player. They were too good for Auckland, although their shooting lacked power. Auckland failed when in front of goal, or should have scored two or three times. Auckland won the toss and played with the wind. They pressed hard from the beginning with good football, but Waikato’s defence was strong and broke up Auckland's combination. The whole Waikato team were playing well and fine football was shown by Auckland also. At half time there was no score. In the second half WaikaLo took the game into Auckland’s territory when Connew found the net. Shortly after Boyd scored another goal. He followed it with a third, hut it was disallowed, owing to offside. AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The control board of the Auckland Football Association met last evening.
