NEW ZEALAND.
AS AUSTRALIA BEEB IT.
’QUAKE REPORT EXAGGERATED
A resident of Melbourne, writing to a friend in Hamilton by tp-day’s mail says:— ' " Well, Melbourne is in a horrible mess wbat with coal and timber strikes and industrial stagnation, so far as the circulation of money is concerned. “ Which is, I suppose, nothing compared with the havoc wrought in the Rickety Islands by the earthquake. The Australian Press is featuring it with double columns and huge crossheads, with the result that Australians for generations to come will regard New Zealand as totally _ unsafe for human habitation. As it is now, many uninformed friends of mine over here wouldn’t go to Maoriland, passage paid, for fear of being engulfed at any moment.
“ The Australian truly gets some queer ideas about blew Zealand. Most of them think it the size of a threepenny bit, and Mrs Jones in Invercargill cfin take a tram ride and visit Mrs Smith at Russell and get back in time to cook hubby’s tea before the usual town exodus at 5 p.m. 1"
