ORGAN RECITAL.
PROGRAMME OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIO. The last organ recital for the season was given in St. Andrew’s Church by Mr E. 11. Apthorp on Saturday evening, when another programme of beautiful music was well rendered. The soft scale passages and the grand fortissimo of Mendelssohn’s Sixth Sonata, the ethereal melodiousness of Liszt's “Consolation,” the fairylike rhythm of Ambrose Thomas’s Gavotte from “Mignon,” the yearning strains of "Cavalleria Rusticana,” the popular “Poet and Peasant” overture (Suppe), the lovely melody of Lemare’s Andantino, the sweetness of Kreisler’s “Licbeslicd,” and the inspiriting strains of the Grand March from "Tannhauser” (Wagner), commanded the rapt attention of the audience.. Mrs A. Lonsdale, who has a pleasing mezzo-soprano voice, sang “Praise” (Hadyn Wood) with sympathy, and gave a fine interpretation of “Break, Break. Break" (Louis Carey). Mr Alick Connell's rfch baritone was heard with good effect in “A Castilian Lament” (Teresa Del Riego) and "Apart” (A Scott Gaily), both of which were sung with great feeling. Rev. H. G. Gilbert briefly thanked the audience for their attendance and the singers for their kind assistance. Those responsible for the arrangement of the recital have done valuable service to the town by providing opportunities for the hearing of musio worthy of the name.
