BIG CRICKET.

ENGLAND v. SOUTH AFRICA

SECOND TEST MATCH.

HOME TEAM COMPILES 302

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Assn. — United Service.)

LONDON, June 29

The second test cricket match, England v. South Africa, was commenced to-day at Lords. There were 30,000 spectators after luncheon. The weather was perfect. The visitors’ team comprised Deane, Catterall, Mitchell, Cameron, Morkel, Owen-Smith, Ochse, Dalton, McMillan, Bell, and Christie. Van Dermerwe was twelfth man. Seidle, Taylor and Quinn were absent on medical advice. Vincent did not' play owing to a strained leg. Therefore the visitors lacked two of their best batsmen and two of their best bowlers.

The ground was hard and cracked and the pitch was fast. The game opened in a sensational manner. England won the toss and lost three wickets for 18 runs. Kiliick and Sutcliffe started confidently, but Kiliick was bowled when the score was eight. Hammond was well caught on the off-side at 18. Then the'first ball to O’Connor, whose first test match it was, rebounded from his pad on to his wicket before the total was altered. Sutcliffe retrieved the situation. He and Hendren pluckily added 93 before Morkel, who had taken all the wickets up to that time, bowled Hendren at 117.

The South Africans fielded magnificently, hut Sutcliffe was missed at first slip when he had made 14. Levland mastered the bowlers, and hit one from McMillan for six. His confidence recalled his Australian form, though he nevor was entirely happy. He hit. 11 fours and scored 100 in 170 minutes, saving a possible collapse for England. The innings lasted 240 minutes and yielded 302.

Catterall, with an hour remaining, opened for South Africa with Mitchell, but he was bowled by the first ball from Larwood.

Mitchell and Christie, in spite of this disastrous start, hatted confidently, and had carried the score to 57 without further loss when stumps were drawn.
