OBITUARY.

LEADING JERBEY BREEDER PASSES. Mr W. J. Hall, of Matatoki, one of the leading breeders and importers of Jersey cattle in New Zealand died at Vancouver on his way home to England. The late Mr Hall left a short time ago with Mrs Hall on a trip to England. He was one of the leading figures In Thames, and for a number of years was a member of the Thames Hospital Board. The news of his death was received in Auckland by cablegram from Vancouver.

MR. JOHN A. PERREAU. The death of Mr. John Alfred Perreau in his 99th year has occurred at Foxton. Mr Perreau was born In England and came to New' Zealand when 21 years of age. MR. EDWARD CARPENTER. LONDON, June 29. The death has occurred of Mr. Edward Carpenter, democratic author and poet, In his eighty-fifth year. Mr. Edward Carpenter was wellknown as a social reformer. He was a native of Brighton, and was educated at Cambridge University, becoming 10th Wrangler and a Fellow of his collage. Taking Orders, he was a curate under F. D. Maurice. He abandoned a clerical career in 1874 and became University Extension lecturer, and wrote “ Towards Demoracy,” in which he says, humbly, “ If I am not level with the’lowest, I am nothing.”

He worked as a market gardener and a maker of sandals. Other books by this Walt Whitman of British democracy are “The Art of 'Creation,” “The Drama of Love and Death,” and " England's Ideal.” Received an address on his 70th birthday from many " intellectuals,” and published “ The Healing of Nations,” in 1915, and an autobiography In 1916.
