MIRACULOUS ESCAPES.
CAR OVERTURNED IN WATER. THREE OCCUPANTS CLIMB OUT. Three young people had a miraculous escape from death on Sunday, when the car they were riding in ran over a bank and capsized in about four feet of water. The occupants of the car were Messrs K. and S. Wallace, sons of Mr J. M. Wallace, of Richmond Downs, Walton, and Miss L. Gallagher, of Walton. Mr K. Wallace was driving the car in the direction of Matamata when they' came across some cattle being driven by Mr Harper, of Walton.
As the car was passing through the cattle one of the beasts crossed in front of it, and in swerving to avoid the animal, the vehicle headed straight for a bank with a drop of six to eight feet, and with about four feet of water at the bottom. The brakes were applied, but apparently did not hold, and the car was capsized In the water in a twinkling. Mr Harper and a lad with him rushed to the rescue, and managed to right the vehicle. Fortunately itwas an open car, and the occupants were able to climb out, and were saved from practically certain dealh. Mr Kenneth Wallace appeared to be the worst sufferer, but they were all reported to be in a satisfactory condition this morning.
