OPTIMISTIC MINISTER.
THE FUTURE FOR FARMING.
THE HON. W. A. VEITCH’S VIEW.
New Zealand has entered upon an entirely new feature of production; that is the fertilising of the soil by top-dressing. So said the Hon W. A. Veitch, Minister of Labour, at the opening of the South Taranaki Winter Show-. "Perhaps I should not call it new," Mr Veitch went on, “because topdressing has been with us for some time now, but we have only just begun to realise what it can mean in increasing production.” Continuing, the Minister said that the Dominion had reason to feel proud of its progress, but there were still two things to be done. One, to multiply dressing 10 to 15 times, and two, to take note of the object lesson given in the display at the show, pointing out how easily and cheaply silage could be made. In the warmer months there was a great reduction of grass and farmers would have to learn how to store the surplus fodder for the colder months of winter. “Although many people speak of the farming industry not making progress,” said Mr Veitch, “it has made amazing progress and I sincerely believe that the New Zealand farmer is now entering upon a more prosperous season than ever All the indications point that way."
